Paper That Works in Many Ways.

Elephant dung paper -- paper made out from elephant's excretion. To those of you who made a wry face --for your information, it doesn't smell at all and there is a fact that elephant's dung is known to be a great ingredient for paper. The dung contains a lot of fibrous element, which is suitable for paper production, and most importantly, the dried elephant dung does smell at all. (Hence -- no smell on the paper.)

There is a number of companies that produces elephant dung paper products and among them, Michi Corporation's Elephant Dung Paper, also known as Zousan (Elephant in Japanese) Paper, is surely the best in many perspectives.

First, the product itself. Zousan Paper products are manufactured in Sri Lanka, and since the products are mostly sold in Japan, designers (art directors) in Japan are providing hands-on training to Sri Lanka's local designers. Its output -- products that matches the needs of local Japanese market.

The second advantageous factor of Michi Corporation's Zosan Paper is its business foundation and strategy.

"Because of the country's urban development, some of the elephant's inhabitant zone has been destroyed. As its consequence, many elephants began descending to a town, creating serious issues, including death of both parties --human and elephant."

Mr. Hisamichi Ueda, the CEO of Michi Corporation said. After acknowledging the country's ongoing problem, Mr. Ueda came up with the idea of founding elephant dung paper production company with a little twist.

"By the incorporation of the company, an elephant, which has been considered as an enemy of human being, became a resource. We paid to people who collected elephant dung by the weight, so that the relationship between these two parties can be restructured. Now, this conlict-based relationship is converted into a business partner.

This model is working out greatly and currently, aside from Japan, the paper is sold in 4 countries, Australia, Korea, Netherlands, and the United States.
